Business career
In 1999, Skelly joined Horizon Wind Energy, when it was a two-man operation, and helped it grow into a multi-billion dollar company over the next nine years. In 2005, investment bank Goldman Sachs bought Horizon, then a private company known as Zilkha Renewables. Goldman Sachs sells Horizon, which has grown to become the third largest wind company in the United States, with $ 2.2 billion for reported profits of nearly $ 1 billion. In 2006, the Houston Business Journal said Skelit said, "Houston is an energy hub, and as renewable energy, including wind, plays a bigger role, there is an opportunity for Houston to engage in growth for that segment."
In 2009, Skelly established Clean Line Energy Partners, a company focused on moving energy from resource regions to distant consumer markets. Clean Line is an independent developer for high-voltage transmission lines, remotely, who want to provide transmission solutions for generators and utilities that serve the load to connect all energy sources with consumers. Established in 2009, Clean Line Energy has not built a transmission infrastructure or signed a binding contract to generate energy, and has not earned any revenue yet. The company's desire to get a leading domain (for personal gain) has resulted in strong opposition and failure to obtain the necessary permits in some states. In addition, distributed generation and capabilities for the East coast market for local energy sources have proven to be a more logical alternative to the outdated Clean Line business plan.
Prior to his time at Horizon Wind, Skelly worked at Energia Global and New World Power. Both positions focus on energy projects in Latin America. Prior to entering the energy industry, he served as a founding partner and manager for the Rainforest Tram in Costa Rica.
congress campaign 2008
In November 2008, Skelly faced John Culberson who held a three-month post in Texas's 7th district election. Skelly's campaign got national attention when he raised more money than the candidate, petahana or challenger, Democrat or Republican, ran for the House of Representatives that year.
Other activities
Skelly serves on the Houston Parks Board and is one of the founders of Houston's Renewable Energy Network. Skelly also serves on the C12 Energy and Trees for Houston advisory board.
