The Pyrene Company Limited from their beginning in 1914, until 1971 when they became Chubb Fire Security Limited, was one of the world's leaders in the manufacture of fire-fighting equipment. The name Pyrene is symbolized by their famous 'pump' pumping equipment installed in public, commercial, and private vehicles throughout the western world.

Company history

In 1907, a Scottish engineer, unable to obtain financial support in England, took his idea for a fire extinguisher to the United States. He founded what was known as the Pyrene Company of Delaware in 1909.

A British branch, The Pyrene Company Limited was founded in 1914 when Wallace B. Phillips, an American businessman founded in Great Queen Street, London, sells pumping pumps. The company moved to Grosvenor Gardens, London in 1918, and then to Stoke Newington in 1920, where a factory to produce soda-acid and foam fire extinguishers was established.

The London General Omnibus Company gave Pyrene a contract for its fire extinguishers in 1924.

In 1927, a metal finishing division was established, which developed the Parkerizing process for metal rust checking. Its Pyrene Limited company sells parts of its chemical division to Brent International Chemical Company which is a stand-alone specialty chemical company that produces various industrial cleaning compounds. Pyrene only retains the right to produce patent fire fighting chemicals. Brent continued to manufacture global fire-fighting chemicals for the Pyrene for several years until the Pyrene redeveloped the chemical side of their business. Brent America was sold to Oakite and later acquired by Chemetall GMBH.

Pyrene moved to a new Art Deco-style factory in 1930, located on Great West Road, Brentford and established a large fire demonstration concept with the construction of a large demonstration next to the Brentford plant, to simulate an oil storage depot.

The Pyrene Phomene installation was installed into many ships during the 1930s, and the 'car bumper' division became established and in 1960 produced about a third of the car bumper used in the UK motor industry.

1931 saw the company's equipment provide protection for events like Brooklands, RAF Pageant Hendon, and Tato Tidworth and Aldershot.

The Queen Mary Liner is protected by the installation of the Pyrene foam firefight system in 1933.

During World War II, Pyrene designed and manufactured ARP equipment for weaponry, industrial and power plants. Expansion is rapid with demand for war for fire-fighting equipment, and projectile production. The main contract is one of the Air Ministry to supply the plane crash tender.

In 1950, a new factory opened in Ferndale, South Wales for the manufacture of fire extinguishers.

The Canadian Pyrene Manufacturing Company, Canada's CO2 Equipment Company and the American Pyrene Company were all acquired during 1953-54. Also in these years the company received a commission from the British Atomic Energy Authority in Harwell to develop a medium for extinguishing sodium and lithium fires, manufactured under the Pyromet brand name.

During 1955, the now famous world-renowned FB5X foam pipe branch was introduced, and the ED-HOL Pyrene system on board, which recycles its own inert vessel exhaust to fight fires in the hold, was developed. For years the Pyrene firefighting system has been installed in some of the world's largest passenger vessels including Queen Elizabeth, Oriana and Empress of England.

Manufacturer of Minimax Limited fire extinguishers, purchased by Pyrene in 1955.

Key contracts made by the company during the late 1950s included a smoke detection system at the BBC Lime Grove Studios in London, smoke detectors for Bristol Britannia aircraft, CO2 fire extinguishing systems for a number of National Rail diesel locomotives, and supplying fire detection and CO2 systems for Lloyd's of London.

In 1959, Pyrene acquired the safety product business from Panorama Equipment, and traded as Panorama Pyrene.

Pyrene Panorama Limited was established in 1959 when Pyrene purchased the Panorama Equipment Limited business, which dates back to 1941. The company was formed initially to produce industrial-sector goggle safety that gave rise to the name- "Panorama".

Also in 1959 Pyrene acquired Roberts McClean who in 1931 introduced self-compressed air breathing apparatus to Britain and the two companies merged under the Panorama Pyrene banner.

In 1976 Fireward Limited, manufacturer since 1964 dry powder fire extinguisher made from plastic also joined with Pyrene Panorama, to form a new Company, Chubb Panorama.

Another addition to the Panorama Group came in 1976 when changes from Pyrene Panorama to Chubb Panorama, Submarine, and Safety Engineering Limited joined the team. Specialists in underwater breathing apparatus and diving equipment, their "Dominair" range is added far into comprehensive enterprise safety equipment coverage.

The Pyrene was taken over by Chubb and Sons in 1967 and continued to operate under the name Pyrene until 1971 when Chubb Fire Security Limited was formed. That same year, a Bristol Britannia plane landed on the Pyrene foam carpet in Manston driven by Donald Chubb.
