Area code 815 is the phone area code for most northern Illinois outside the Chicago area and Quad Cities. It also serves some of Chicago's western suburbs.
815 is one of the four original Illinois area codes established in 1947. Splitted in 1957, when most of the western part was combined with a section of the northern part of area code 217 to form the 309 area code.
In preparation of the overlay area code ( 779 ), all calls from area 815 need to be contacted with area code starting February 17, 2007. A month later, the 779 code is activated.
