Histori
Handy was founded in the summer of 2012 as a Handybook by Oisin Hanrahan, Umang Dua, Weina Scott (computer science graduate from Harvard University) and Ignacio Leonhardt (graduate of Duke University and London School of Economics). In the fall of 2012, he moved his headquarters from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Manhattan, New York. The online housekeeping market they create follows a shared economic approach and business model that has been compared with Uber. The Handybook name was chosen because it was the place to order the artisan and cleaning service.
Handybook launched with incubation support from Harvard Innovation Lab. In October 2012 Handybook collected 2 million dollars in initial funding from General Catalyst Partners and Highland Capital Partners. The following year in October 2013, the Handybook collected 10 million dollars more from existing investors along with BoxGroup David Tisch and other investors. The same month handybook initiated talks to acquire San Francisco-based Exec, a similar service to hire people to complete household tasks. In January 2014, Handybook completed the acquisition of a company that helped establish a West Coast presence. In May 2014, the company employed nearly a hundred people.
In June 2014, the Handybook raised 30 million dollars in a series of B-series investments led by Revolutionary Growth. At this point, the company has expanded operations to twenty-six cities across North America, including Vancouver and Toronto. It also reported that the service was used to complete about 10,000 jobs per week. In September 2014, Handybook changed its name to Handy. A week after the name change, Handy acquired Mopp, a similar service based in London, with an undisclosed appraisal. After the acquisition, Mopp continues to operate under the same name, adding a "powered by Handy" subtitle to his brand. The founders of Mopp Pete Dowds and Tom Brooks continue to expand Handy in the European market.
In November 2014, Handy was sued for allegations of labor breaches, including that the company deliberately misclassified its employees as independent contractors.
In March 2015, Handy announced another round of funding led by TPG Growth, which earned 15 million dollars. In May 2015, TechCrunch reported that Handy is in talks to acquire Homejoy of its competitors. However, Homejoy closed in July 2015 without being acquired amid the classification of workers' suits. Immediately after Homejoy's expected termination announcement, Handy offers a $ 1,000 signing bonus to every Homejoy worker who wants to switch to Handy services. In June, just a month earlier, Handy has announced completing one million bookings on the platform.
As of November 2015, the company plans to include the delivery and assembly of furniture as some of the services offered. Handy also announced its D series of 50 million dollars. This round of funding is led by Fidelity Management & amp; Research includes contributions from some of the company's previous investors.
