ABM Industries Inc. is a facility management provider in the United States. ABM was founded in 1909 by Morris Rosenberg in San Francisco, CA as a single-person window washer business. Over 100 years later, the company is one of the largest facility management providers with more than 100,000 employees, more than 300 offices, and 20 international locations. The company performs facility services, builds maintenance services, and facilitates outsourcing services for the company. ABM Industries Incorporated primarily provides its services to commercial, industrial, government and retail clients throughout the United States and international locations.

ABM provides a range of facilities management services in areas such as health care, electricity and lighting, energy, engineering facilities, HVAC and mechanics, cleaning services, landscaping and land, parking and transportation.

ABM is a company that has a wide range of services, many of which revolve around energy efficiency and sustainability such as building improvements, electric vehicle charging stations, and renewable energy solutions. An eco-friendly solution designed to help building owners earn LEED certification and Energy Star is also an ABM-focused service to help in reducing energy use and reducing carbon emissions.

Two of ABM's most used services are hygiene and parking services. Hygiene services include commercial cleaning of surfaces and floors to biomedical waste and cleaning of computer/server rooms. ABM works with airports, universities and schools, healthcare facilities, retail and shopping centers, stadiums, industrial buildings, offices and various other facilities. The services provided by ABM apply to a wide range of facilities and most include integrated facility management, maintenance, engineering, and repair.

History

1909-1944

In 1909, Morris Rosenberg, founder of the company, began cleaning shop windows in San Francisco, CA. The company took the name of American Building Maintenance in 1913 and acquired the Easterday Janitorial Supply Company in 1927.

In the 1920s and 1930s, ABM expanded its business on the West Coast by offering an annual cleaning contract for the business. In 1921, ABM became the first cleaner contractor in America to clean up a major college campus after contracting to clean up Stanford University.

When Morris Rosenberg died in 1935, his eldest son Theodore "Ted" Rosenberg became president and his younger son, Sydney, joined the company in 1937. Ted bought an electric company in the same year and ABM cleaned up the Navy's vessel and wired on Water Buffalo amphibious vehicles. during World War II. By the end of the war, ABM had grown to 17 offices in the US and Canada.

1945-1999

The growth of ABM continued throughout the postwar years and the company went public in 1962 in an over-the-counter market with Ted serving as Chairman and Sydney as CEO. Ted remained involved with ABM until his death in 2010 serving on the Board of Directors and Sydney Rosenberg retired as director in December 1997.

In 1965, ABM went out of the over-the-counter stock market to be listed on the US Stock Exchange, now known as NYSE Amex Equities. In the late 1960s, ABM acquired a company that became known as Ampco System Parking, CommAir Mechanical, Amtech Elevator Services, and Amtech Lighting Services. In 1971, ABM debuted on the New York Stock Exchange with a ticker ABM symbol. ABM Engineering was established in the early 1990s and received ISO 9002 certification in 1999. At the end of 1999, ABM employed more than 55,000 people and reported annual sales revenues of more than $ 1.6 billion.

2000-2009

Henrik Slipsager became president and Chief Executive Officer of ABM Industries in November 2000. Divestitas was made including selling Amtech Elevator in 2003 and CommAir Mechanical in 2005. ABM acquired Lakeside Building Maintenance in 2002; American Security Service in 2004; and four cleaning companies - Colin's Service System in the Northeast; Cleaning operation Initial Cleaning Services in Maryland; HGO in Philadelphia; and Brandywine Building Services in the Delaware area, southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

17 ABM employees were killed at the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. The company also lost its largest corporate account, which contributed $ 65 million in annual revenue. A window washer that worked for ABM successfully used a squeegee to open the elevator doors that saved many people.

In 2007, ABM acquired the assets of HealthCare Parking Systems of America, Inc. (HPSA), a Tampa-based healthcare-based parking service provider, with annual revenues of approximately $ 26 million.

Also in 2007, ABM completed the acquisition of OneSource Services Inc. (London AIM: OSS) for $ 365 million in cash. OneSource is a service provider of outsourced facilities, including cleanliness, landscaping, general repair and maintenance, and other specialized services for over 10,000 commercial, industrial, institutional and retail accounts in the US.

2010-present

In 2010, ABM Industries and its CEO, Henrik Slipsager, were featured on the second season of the CBS reality show Undercover Boss . Later that year, ABM acquired The Linc Group, LLC, also known as TLG, for $ 300 million. Also in 2010, ABM acquired selected parking assets from L & amp; R Group of Companies as well as all assets of three parking companies: Five Star Parking, Network Parking Company Ltd., and System Parking, Inc.

In May 2012, ABM purchased TEGG Franchise Operations including CurrentSAFE. In November 2012, ABM acquired AirServ Corp., based in Atlanta for $ 158 million in cash, they also acquired HHA Services, food service providers and facilities for hospitals, health care systems, long-term care facilities and retirement communities.

ABM becomes the official cleaning service company of the Los Angeles Convention Center in December 2013. The company also serves AEG-affiliated venues such as the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, the O2 Arena in London, and others.

ABM Industries began working with Cornell University in 2014 to install the first solar array of school panels, designed to lower energy costs and act as a learning tool for students. Throughout 2014, ABM Industries made several acquisitions including GBM Support Services Group Limited, Airco Commercial Services and Alfa Mechanical Services.

In 2015, the company was named Scott Salmirs as the 7th CEO in the 106-year history of ABM. In May 2015, ABM acquired CTS Services and Facility Support Services In August 2015, ABM became the official security provider for Tyson Foods Inc. at their processing and distribution facilities across the US. In October 2015, ABM sold its Security Business to the $ 131 million Universal Service Division of America, and acquired Westway Services Holdings, a technical engineering company for British customers, in December 2015.

In June 2016, it was announced that ABM Industries had joined the Fortune 500 for the first time.

In July 2017, it was announced that ABM Industries would buy GCA Services Group for 1.25 billion dollars.

Re-Statement

On December 20, 2004, the company restated its results for four fiscal years through October 2003 to correct the error in how to calculate the insurance reserves.
