The Newark College is a coeducational private school located in Livingston, in Essex County, New Jersey, USA, serving students in grades six through twelve. The school has been accredited by the Association of State Colleges and Schools of the United States Secondary School Commission since 1928.
Newark Academy is one of the few pre-Revolutionary schools still operating in the United States and is considered the oldest private schools in the country and the seventh day of the second oldest school in the state of New Jersey (behind the Rutgers Preparatory School). The Academy was founded in 1774 by Alexander MacWhorter, a prominent cleric and advisor to George Washington, and is located on Market Street in Downtown Newark. Temporarily closed after being burned by the British during the Revolutionary War, the school was reopened in new premises in 1792. In 1802, the Academy opened a separate division for girls, but the innovative program was closed in 1859. After 1929, he moved to First Street in part Roseville in Newark. Finally, in 1964, the Academy moved from Newark to its current location, the campus is a 68-acre (280,000 m 2 ) in Livingston, and became fully co-educational in 1971.

Newark Academy is located on the 68-acre campus (280,000 m 2 ) in northern New Jersey.
Hawkes Memorial Library , opened in 1974, holds a collection of 23,000 volumes, as well as extensive periodicals and microfilm collections.
The Elizabeth B. McGraw Art Center, opened in 1992, contains three art studio (ceramic, drawing and painting) studio rooms, dark rooms, band/orchestra rooms, choir room, dance studio, Theater "black box "and an art gallery.
Morris Interactive Learning Center , opened in 1995, houses 18 iMac computers, multimedia systems (interactive whiteboards and projectors, Blu-ray DVD systems), and scanners and printers for student and faculty use.

The William E. and Carol G. Simon Family Field House , which opened in 2001. The 57,000-square-foot athletic center (5,300 m 2 ) has a gym with three a basketball court, a six-lane swimming pool with a viewing area, a four-lane track, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Upper School Academic Center opens in autumn 2012 and covers 18,500 square feet of new construction and 2,500 square feet of renovated space and includes 13 classrooms, two science laboratories, multi-purpose areas, multiple collaborative learning groups small and shared areas.
The latest addition is the Wilf Middle School wing, which houses two floors of classrooms, laboratories, offices and public spaces that accommodate teachers and high school students. The classroom has Apple TV technology and SmartBoards, which has since been applied unilaterally throughout the school. During the construction of a new high school, the Newark College also renovated all the science laboratories, beginning with the second floor of natural science and chemistry space, and moving into the first floor physical science room. These rooms, as well as the labs in high school, have been endowed with sophisticated laboratory equipment.
There are plans to build a new auditorium in the next few years, which will be complemented by better theater technology, more seating, and more structured for the show.
Newark Academy's outdoor facilities include a courtyard with seating area, two baseball diamonds, softball field, all-weather track, hockey area, two lacrosse and soccer fields, two soccer fields, a half field pitch, cross country courses and ten tennis courts.

The Faculty of Newark Academy has an average of 17.5 years of teaching experience, and 85 percent of 78 teachers and administrators have advanced degrees; nine has earned a doctorate. All faculty members are experts in their field. Teachers are available to meet regularly with their students, and students thrive in this environment where collaboration is not only allowed but encouraged.
In 2007, Donald M. Austin was appointed as the 49th Principal for the Newark Academy. He previously served as resident director for School Year Abroad in Rennes, France. He earned a bachelor's degree in English and French from Georgetown University, and a master of philosophy in French studies from New York University.
The Austin administrator team includes Richard DiBianca, Ph.D., principal of high school; Tom Ashburn, headmaster of high school; Pegeen Galvin, the student dean; and Frederick Von Rollenhagen, dean of the faculty.
The most prominent among the staff at Newark Academy is Blackwood Parlin. Mr. Parlin was instructed at Newark Academy for over 50 years and currently serves as a school archiving.
Student body
In the academic year 2017-18, the Newark Academy has students from 80 communities in grades 6-12. There were 418 students in high school and 181 students in high school. Ethnic minority students comprise 45% of the student population. International students come from Eritrea, India, Japan, Singapore and the UK. Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate, students must complete four years of English, three years of humanities, three years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, proficiency in second language (level 3), one year of art, three Terms of June, and immersion travel, 40 hours of service society, and senior projects.
Academic Offers
Newark Academy offers a variety of classes in various disciplines and at various levels. Newark Academy offers many IB and AP classes, but also has a non-IB or AP-level college level in Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Non-Euclidean Geometry, and Number Theory.
Newark Academy is part of the Malone School Online Network, a group of elite independent schools across the country that offer online classes via webcam along with others, run by teachers at different schools. MSON offers many levels of college and elective classes such as "Are We Rome ?," "Creative Writing in the Digital Age" and "Positive Psychology."
Newark Academy also offers an Independent Study program for seniors. The elderly may choose to take a fully designed one-year course for a subject of their choosing. Students work with faculty advisors, and often one other student helps design the course, throughout the year researching topics at hand and peaking in the final project. Courses in the past have focused on feminism, the history of modern American justice, among other subjects.
Advanced curriculum
Newark Academy is the only independent school in New Jersey that offers the Advanced Placement (AP) program and the International Baccalaueate Diploma (I.B.).
Advanced Placement
The College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP) offers high school students the opportunity to undertake college level work. Successful achievement on the peak test can result in credit or advanced placement on matriculation to college. Newark Academy offers courses leading to 21 AP exams in all five academic disciplines.
International Baccalaureate
In 1991, Newark Academy became the first school in New Jersey to provide an International Baccalaalaureate diploma. The I.B. A diploma is awarded after successfully completing a rigorous two-year curriculum. There are 74 members of Class 2017 and Class 2018 who are pursuing full IBs. diplomas, and about 95% of Class 2017 registered on at least one I.B. Of course.
University Placement

Athletics
The Newark Academy Minutemen competes in the Super Essex Conference, which includes public and private high schools in Essex County and operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State (NJSIAA) Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). Prior to the redesign of NJSIAA 2010, the school had previously participated in the Colonial Hills Conference that included both public and parochial high schools covering Essex County, Morris County and Somerset County in westernern Jersey.
Newark Academy offers a total of 23 sports programs during the school year.
- Fall sports: men's and women's soccer, field hockey, women's tennis, men's football, women's volleyball, and cross-country men and women.
- Winter sports: men's and women's fencing, swimming and basketball, men's wrestling
- Springtime sports: golf, baseball, softball, lacrosse and track & amp; field, men's tennis.
High school students are required to participate in at least one sport each season, although interscholastic competition is not mandatory. The Women's Tennis and Tennis Academy Program in Newark, coached by William "Arky" Crook, Star-Ledger Counselor of the 1990s, has enjoyed state-of-the-art success for many years. Students at Upper School are not required to play sports but about 86% choose to do so.
From 1984 to 1989, the Newark College was the location of the Livingston Open, a Grand Prix tennis circuit tournament. The Grand Prix was the only professional circuit from 1985 until it was replaced by ATP Tour in 1990. The tournament was won by Andre Agassi in 1988, earning him his seventh career title.

Currently, Newark Academy has four publications: the student newspaper, "The Minuteman" in publications since 1941; the annual newspaper magazine "Minuteman Life"; yearbook, "The Polymnian"; and literary magazine, "Prism". Newark Academy also publishes alumni magazine, "Lumen", twice a year.
