A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by individuals or organizations to send material to multiple recipients. The term is often extended to include those who subscribe to the list, so the customer group is referred to as a "mailing list", or simply a "list".

Usage as a discussion forum
Mailing lists precede web forums and can provide similar functionality. When used in this way, mailing lists are sometimes known as discussion lists or discussion forums . The discussion list provides several advantages over traditional web forums, so the list is still used on various projects, especially Git and Debian. Advantages through web forums include the ability to work offline, the ability to sign/encrypt posts via GPG, and the ability to use e-mail client features, such as filters.

Type
At least two types of mailing lists can be defined: the announcement list is closer to the original meaning, where "mailing lists" people are used as recipients for newsletters, magazines, or advertisements. Traditionally this was done through the postal system, but with the advent of email, electronic mailing lists became popular. The second type allows members to post their own items that are broadcasted to all other members of the mailing list. This second category is usually known as a discussion list .
More definitions
When identical or identical materials are sent to all customers on the mailing list, it is often referred to as a letter or explosion. Lists for such use may also be referred to as distribution lists.
On a legitimate (non-spam) mailing list, individuals can subscribe or unsubscribe themselves.
Mailing lists are often rented or sold. If hired, the tenant agrees to use the mailing list only for the time agreed upon by the contract. The mailing list owner usually enforces this with "salting" (known as "seeding" in direct mail) mailing lists with fake addresses and creating new salt for each time the list is rented. The unscrupulous tenant may try to bypass the salt by renting several lists and combine them to find a valid public address.
Mailing list brokers exist to help organizations hire their lists. For some list owners, such as special niche publications or charity groups, their lists may be some of their most valuable assets, and calo mailing lists help them maximize their list value.
Mailing lists are e-mail addresses of people interested in the same subject, members of the same work group, or who take the class together. When a member of the list sends a note to a group-specific address, the e-mail is broadcast to all members of the list. The main advantage of mailing lists over things like web-based discussions is that when new messages are available, they are immediately delivered to the participant's mailbox. A mailing list can sometimes also include information such as phone numbers, postal addresses, fax numbers and more.
Washing list
Listwashing is a process in which each entry in a mailing list is deleted. This mailing list usually contains an email address or phone number of those who do not subscribe voluntarily. Entry removed from list after complaint received. Only reporters are deleted through this process. It is widely believed that only a small percentage of those who are uncomfortable with unsolicited emails end up sending the right complaints. Since most of those who are not subscribed voluntarily remain on the list, and only complainers who stop complaining because they are removed, this helps spammers to maintain a "complaint-free" list of annoying email addresses. Internet service providers who make complaints to the spam are often seen as helping spammers in the washing list, or, in short, help spammers. The most legitimate list holders provide their subscribers with a regular listing service and duplicate data for free or for a small fee.
