History

Establishments and early years

The Carlisle Incorporated Company has a history that began in 1917, when Charles S. Moomy opened the Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to sell inner tires to Montgomery Ward and Company. With thirty employees, Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company started producing tubes in the car. The company continued to grow and expand through the 1920s.

With the fall of the Stock Market in 1929 and the beginning of the Depression, Carlisle Tire and Rubber, like most other companies of the time, found itself in a desperate struggle to survive. Towards the end of the 1930s, to avoid bankruptcy, Moomy changed all his common and preferred shares to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia which at that time, as the largest shareholder, had control over the Company.

The end of the depression and the beginning of World War II forced a change in the rubber industry. Japan cut 95% of natural rubber supplies from the East Indies, forcing Carlisle, along with other companies, to seek other sources. In December 1945, Carlisle began producing tires in the use of synthetic rubber.

Carlisle Tire and Rubber was bought by Pharis Tire and Rubber Company in 1943 for $ 330,000. But significant losses were followed and in 1949, the Board of Directors decided to liquidate the company. All Carlisle shares were distributed to Pharis shareholders and the company was officially renamed Carlisle Corporation. In 1946, Carlisle purchased a company that produced a molded friction product that was used on traditional brake shoe and thus started the starting point of what is currently Carlisle Brake & amp; Friction. It also ushered in a new phase for Carlisle as they began to grow as a diversified manufacturing company.

Next development

During the 1950s and 1960s, Carlisle continued to acquire other companies that further diversified their product mix to include isolated wires and cables, now known as Carlisle Interconnect Technologies. On June 1, 1960, Carlisle Companies Incorporated became a public company on NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) with ticker symbol "CSL." In the late 1960s, Carlisle produced aerospace and electronic products, recreational tires, automotive accessories and other different products.

In the 1970s Carlisle pioneered the roof of a rubber sheet. Using highly engineered formulation and processing techniques to produce synthetic rubber sheets that can compete with traditional roofing materials. It established Carlisle as a formidable player in the new and replacement roof market. This is the origin of what today is the Carlisle Construction Material. In the 1980s Carlisle acquired a company that produces plastic food and melamine formed from compressed plastics, and then a company that produces food equipment and supplies, which is the beginning of the current Carlisle FoodService product.
