Company history
Melville Bissell developed an early carpet sweeper to help clear the glassware store she and her wife Anna had and operated. The device was patented as a Bissell carpet sweeper in 1876. In 1883 Bissell built the company's first factory in Grand Rapids. In the 1890s the company had an international presence and produced 1000 sweepers per day.
Melville Bissell died in 1889, and his wife Anna took over as leader of the company. He served as president of the company from 1889 to 1919 and chairman of the board from 1919 to 1934.
Over the years the company has grown from manufacturing only a mechanical sweeper to produce vacuum cleaners and carpet cleaners.

Today
In 2004 the company acquired a license for the Woolite trademark for all carpet and upholstery cleaning formulas for $ 62 million. It has also moved into the pet care industry, manufacturing enclosures and solutions designed specifically to clean pet hair and stains. While other competitors saw sales declines with many percentage points during the economic downturn, Bissell's sales remained stable. In 2009, they surpassed Hoover to take the number one position for floor maintenance sales in North America.
