Plot

Rashad is a teenager who lives in Atlanta, Georgia with Uncle George, and his younger brother, Ant. He and his brother had been raised by George since their parents died in a car accident, and they worked with him as part of his custodian company. When not working or finishing his last semester of high school, Rashad spends most of his time with his friends. Rashad is a talented artist but does not see much of the future in that field because he has been accustomed to working in the family business. Esquire, Rashad's best friend, went to prep school on the opposite side of town from where they lived, and tried to attend an Ivy League college after a senior year. However, he finds that he will need a letter of recommendation from someone who has a high position to better his chances of being admitted to the school he wants to attend.

Rashad and his friends are also a skate crew in the skating rink where local teenagers hang out. While there, Rashad captures New-New's eyes, a girl with a mysterious background, as she only looks around her as she mingles with her friends. The two became attracted to each other and they then kissed her when she gave her a ride home in her El Camino Chevrolet. Esquire immediately developed a dislike for Rashad's new love interest, given his bad company. No longer under Rashad's supervision, Ant was involved with Marcus, a drug dealer, and started selling for him.

At work one day, Esquire meets John Garnett, a millionaire. Both became friends and Esquire saw an opportunity to get a letter of recommendation. When Esquire went to Garnett's house to retrieve the letter, he met his daughter, Erin, who turned out to be New-New. Erin says that he will reveal where Esquire actually came from (something his father lied to) if he tells Rashad about him.

Music for ATL will be released as a soundtrack but they record so much music that it becomes the 4th studio album T.I. King. It features singles like What You Know, Back Top, Why You Want and Aaliyah at Your Best (You Are Love).

Production

ATL Story is loosely based on material by Dallas and Tionne Watkins, the producers who set out to describe their experience growing on the south side of Atlanta in the early 90s. Watkins and producer Jody Gerson approached James Lassiter with the idea of a skating rink involving many people in the Atlanta music scene, and how all these people will attend the ice rink every Sunday night in their teens.

Chris Robinson , a famous music video director, was contacted with an offer to direct Austin and Watkins visuals, and took his first feature with ATL . The filmmakers decided Robinson would be fit for the project because of his ability to capture music-driven aspects of the film, as provided by his field experience. They also cite his talent in telling stories. According to Austin producer, "many music video directors can not capture the story, so what we do is turn on the cassettes of the directors, turn off the music and just watch to see if we can find the story.Cross far and away the best." > ATL first feature, Robinson stated that "as director of music video, I will get a lot of scripts to do with great visual images but I want to start doing something that has a heart." After being hired, Robinson went to Atlanta and spend time with Austin to try to absorb unique city vibrations and energy.

An open-ended audition was held in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York to put aside the audience for candidates who can compose the ensemble player of the film. Robinson has decided he wants an unknown actor to appear in the movie. After the players gathered, Robinson asked the actors to gather in Atlanta for six weeks to practice the script and familiarize themselves with each other. "All these young black talents are out there, all young black actors who do not get gunshots or who have to wait years to get their shots, get their shots on this movie, and they carry it."

Three months before the start of production, the actors gathered at Skatetown Atlanta to begin training for a series of skates in the film. Some have never used skates before. Vaughn Newton, the actor skate captain, works hard, usually practicing five hours a day. "Lauren and the twins, Malika and Khadija, adapt very quickly," Newton said. "People are coming a bit slower, Al Be, Jason, and Jackie Long are growing very fast, I'm determined to learn, they're all great disciples and very supportive of each other." In addition to the lead role, Robinson decided to include a lot of brilliant acting in the film, generally involving people who are popular in the Atlanta music scene, the core element of the film. Music producer Jazze Pha plays DJ skating rink; Rico Wade, part of the Atlanta-based production team, Organized Noize, who also frequented Jellybeans in the early 90s, also appeared. R & amp; B singer Monica, a protà © à © gÃÆ'  © producer of Austin, also plays a Waffle House waitress in the movie. Some of the most sought-after music video models in the south make an appearance also including 'Whyte Chocolate' also known as Monique Harris-Ford. There are also brilliant acting from rapper Bone Crusher, Konkrete, and Killer Mike.

Dallas Austin co-ordinates music for the film, which executive producer Timothy M. Bourne says is "all new music rooted in the Atlanta vibe." Austin has produced its first feature with Drumline in 2002, and wants to make sure ATL will be as authentic as its hometown culture using its current hip-hop scene. as background story. Music in an arena environment is the way Austin airs movies "as a way to make music without putting Singin 'in the Rain on the screen... without kids breaking into a song." Is determined to show Hollywood and New York culture from the South. "

Under the title of "Jellybean" work, the film was filmed for a span of six weeks in fifty-two locations throughout the city of Atlanta. Filming takes place in the summer, sometimes in temperatures over a hundred degrees, challenging players and crew ability to stay motivated. "Often we have to motivate each other to say 'listen, raise your game, hard work,'" Robinson said. "And sometimes we need to back off, take a breath, so we can get through it."

Design

Chris Robinson and Robb Buono, the designer of the film's production, decided that the script was composed of two distinct parts - the reality of teenagers' life and the time they spent in the skating rink. According to Buono, "we want to see it (arena) through rose-colored glasses, because when you rethink your memories of that period of time - no matter how old you are - you see everything bigger. Our goal is to make the skating rink become a grows when we keep going back, and every time it's more magical - contrast Saturday Night Fever - like the reality of life. "Robinson and Buono chose to take pictures at Cascade Family Skating Rink in Atlanta after visiting and witnessing the energy and the excitement of the racecourse. However, the filmmakers felt Cascade's interior design was too bland and decided it should be redesigned.

Buono choose black and red color for new color palette rink. Red is used for intensity and energy, and black is used because the arena will appear larger. In addition, the use of black will be more in contrast to the red color. The ceiling above the rink has been removed for lighting purposes. The arena floor is also smoothed with dark colors to give a better light reflection. Rigging for lights becomes an artistic challenge for Buono. Working with the arts department, rigging electrics and rigging grips, he designed the effect of a wheelbarrow that moves with skating motions and allows the lights to be programmed, aesthetically turning both ends of the arena and capturing skating action sequences. The skate rental, arcade, and snack bar sections are redesigned in the arena as well, so the area other than the skating floor will not feel monotonous. "We do every inch of the arena," Buono said. "The carpets on the walls, the ceiling paintings, the lights, the snack paintings, the color changing the table. We use lots of neon and bold bright colors."

Reception

Critical response

ATL generally received positive reviews from critics. In Allmovie, the film was given three stars, and critic Derek Armstrong, in the positive reviews of the film, stated that the film is only an average coming from the age story "because some substance must take the place behind for all these beautifully created styles. "Melissa Walters at BlackFilm.com , while believing in some writing that would be a cliche and a familiar story, also called the film" sincere, sincere, and fun. " Film critic Roger Ebert awarded three movie stars in his review at the Chicago Sun-Times, stating the film was "warm" and praising "the sincere and genuine sincerity of the film's script for his character." IGN.com gave the movie a 4/5 rating, naming Robinson's "expert" directorial debut. Metacritic, a normalized film rating website, gave the film a 63/100 score. On the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the film averaged 62 percent approval rate. Ruthe Stein of the San Francisco Chronicle called the film one of the better genres, praising the looks of young players, and movie stars T.I. especially. On Yahoo! The film, based on 13 reviews of the film is average B- by critic standard.

However, all the reviews about the picture were not so enthusiastic. Lisa Schwarzbaum from Entertainment Weekly sequenced the B-movie, saying that while the skating scene was an explosion, the movie stumbled while trying to too much for too many viewers. Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times said he was surprised that with so many untested actors rounding out the main character, "the most amateur thing about it is the script." Genzlinger is also called the cliché scenario - tampered and predicted, while giving credit to the young actors of the film. He is also critical of Chris Robinson's direction, stating that he "can not stay with the scene long enough to let his actors build momentum." At Atlanta Journal-Constitution , Bob Longino gave a negative review of the movie, showing it as "boring, unattractive, and slow". However, Longino did say that the star of T.I. and Big Boi's performances increased as the film progressed, and that there were some laughing comedic moments in the film.
