Histori

ASQC was founded in 1946 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a way for qualified experts and manufacturers to maintain the quality improvement techniques used during World War II. The organization changed its name from "American Society for Quality Control" to "American Society for Quality" in 1997.

Today, ASQ is a global organization with members in more than 150 countries. ASQ has service centers in Mexico, China and India, and has established strategic alliances with many organizations in countries such as Brazil and the United Arab Emirates to promote ASQ products and training.

ASQ provides its members with certification, training, publications, conferences, and other services. Internationally, ASQ has established relationships with non-profit organizations that have equal mission and principles, establishing collaborative efforts to meet the quality needs of enterprises, individuals, and organizations. ASQ is the founding partner of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), a quarterly economic indicator.

Since 1989, ASQ has been organizing the annual Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. ASQ also provides the Dorian Shainin Medal, which is given annually for "Developing and Applying a Creative or Unique Statistics Approach in Solving Relative Problems with Product or Service Quality".

Certification

ASQ offers a variety of professional certifications related to various aspects of a qualified profession. Trials are awarded nationally and, for a limited degree, around the world several times each year. The body of knowledge for each certification is maintained through peer review every few years with a rotating schedule. The first ASQ certification was offered in 1968.

All certifications listed are of this reference unless otherwise specified.

In a 2008 press release for 40 years of ASQ certification, the three most popular were engineers (CQE), followed by auditors (CQA) and Six Sigma Black Belts (CSSBB).
