Wendy Richard , born July 20, 1943 - February 26, 2009) is an English actress famous for playing the role of Miss Shirley Brahms at Are You Being Served ? and Pauline Fowler at EastEnders last for almost 22 years. Until death on his EastEnders character screen in December 2006, he was one of two original cast members of the continuous program of the first episode in 1985, along with Adam Woodyatt, who played it in the nephew screen Ian Beale.
He died on February 26, 2009 at the Harley Street clinic where he was treated for breast cancer.

Family and early life
Richard, an only child, was born in Middlesbrough in 1943. His parents, Henry and Beatrice Reay (nÃÆ' à © e Cutter) Emerton, is a tax collector and runs the Corporations Hotel in town. Emerton and Cutter were married in Paddington in 1939. When Richard was a baby, his family moved to Bournemouth. They then moved to the Isle of Wight and then to London, where they run Shepherds Tavern on Shepherd Market, where Elizabeth Taylor and Antony Armstrong-Jones, the Earl of Snowdon 1 are said to have become customers. Richard attended the local elementary school, St. George's, but his education was disrupted when his family moved again, this time to the Valentine Hotel at Gants Hill, then in Essex, now in Greater London. Another step, to Streatham Park Hotel in south London, followed a few months later. There, in December 1954, Richard's father committed suicide. Wendy, then 11, found her body. Her mother Beatrice never married again and died of liver cancer in May 1972.
Richard was enrolled at Royal Masonic School for Girls at Rickmansworth after the death of his father, as Henry was a Freemason, and assistance at the expense of being given by the organization. She found the school too tight, and her artist called her paintings and pictures "affected, somewhat like her." Richard dreamed of being a TV continuity girl or movie star from a young age and, after leaving school at the age of 15, helped pay his way through the Italian Theater Art Academy of Conti in London by working in the fashion department at Fortnum and Mason. That's when he decided to change his family name to Richard, because "it's short and neat." While in Italy Conti, Richard appeared on television with Sammy Davis, Jr. in Sammy Meets the Girls' ATV program and also at No Hiding Place.

Careers
Richard was first acquainted with the TV viewers who played Joyce Harker, a regular on the BBC's 1960s soap opera The Newcomers. Richard's first appearance in the television series, however, was as a teenager on Stranger on the Shore, which debuted in 1961. The theme song of the series is Acker Bilk's solo clarinet of the same name.
In 1962, Richard Cockney's distinctive vocals helped make it No. 1 on the UK singles chart with Mike Sarne's "Come Outside" single.
Richard appears in a scene shoot from the release version of the movie The Beatles Help! (1965).
In 1965, Richard appeared in an episode of the original Likely Lads series as a household cleaning salesman called Lynn. He also has a little part of the same year at Danger Man (US: Secret Agents ) on the episode "Do not Nail Him Yet". Richard's first soap role was as a teenage supermarket until Joyce Harker's girl at The Newcomers, who ran on BBC1 from 1965 to 1969. She appeared in Dad's Army (first as Edith Parrish, and then as Shirley's Private Walker girlfriend), and Up Pompeii! .
She is a regular cast member of the 1970s sitcom Are You Becoming Served? as Miss Shirley Brahms, a shop assistant with a heavy Cockney accent. (Richard also appeared on Are You Being Served? the sequel to Grace & Favor in 1992 and 1993; the program is syndicated in the United States under the title Are You Medium Presented? Again! ). Richard appeared in two films Carry On, playing a small role in Carry On Matron and supporting parts in Carry On Girls (both films also featured) in front of EastEnders fellow Barbara Windsor.) Richard's other film roles include No Blades of Grass (1970), Gumshoe (1971) starring Albert Finney , and the film version On The Buses (1971), Bless This House (1972), and Are You Being Served? (1977).
EastEnders
Richard later found success as a heroine and matriarch Pauline Fowler in the soap opera BBC EastEnders, the role he played from the first episode in 1985 until the character was killed in an episode that was broadcast on Christmas Day 2006.
On July 10, 2006, the BBC has announced that Richard has decided to leave EastEnders after more than 20 years on the show. An interview with The Sun revealed that the problem with the EastEnders storyline (especially Pauline's marriage to Joe Macer) was the main cause of her departure.
In 2007, Richard was awarded the British Soap Award for 'Special Achievement' for his role at EastEnders.
Later role
Richard appeared regularly on the BBC Radio Just a Minute program from 1989 to 1994. He returned for subsequent appearances in 2002 and 2003.
In 2000, Richard was appointed Member of the Royal Order of the United Kingdom (MBE) in the Queen's Anniversary.
At the end of 2006, Richard was seen as a guest presenter on the series of the City Hospital on BBC and on March 31, 2007, he presented documentary A Tribute to John Inman, > for BBC2. She also gave the interview for the first time in years, making an appearance on The Paul O'Grady Show, Little Brother Brother Loose Women, Parkinson, and the special Gloria's Greats Biography Channel with Gloria Hunniford, among others.
In April 2007, Richard announced that he would appear in a new role for the first time since leaving EastEnders in a new sitcom written by David Croft entitled Here Comes The Queen . The project came after he personally asked Croft to write something for him. Richard commented: "This part is like an old version of Miss Brahms". A pilot episode was made, which was considered poor, and it was never transmitted.
At the end of 2007, it was announced that Richard would join the second series of the sitcom ITV1 Benidorm plays a "hard, rough", wheelchair-bound character; The episode was aired in April 2008.
In January 2008, an advertisement for The Post Office featuring Richard (as a cannon man) began to show. In February 2008, she got the role of Ny. Crump in the episode of "A Pocket Full of Rye" from Agatha Christie's Marple TV series
Personal life
Richard married four times. His first marriage was with music publisher Len Blach in 1972, which lasted only five months. For six years he lived with advertising director Will Thorpe; even though his co-star on Are You Being Served? realized that he physically defeated him, he married Thorpe in 1980, eventually leaving him after 18 months of marriage. Her third marriage to Paul Glorney, a carpenter, took place in Westminster, London, in 1990. The marriage ended in a divorce four years later. Richard then lives with John Burns, a painter and decorator 20 years younger than him, in the Marylebone area of ââLondon. They lived together from 1996 until his death and married on October 10, 2008 at a hotel in Mayfair London. She has no children.
Richard is a Conservative Party supporter. During the prime leadership of Margaret Thatcher, Richard was Thatcher's frequent and conspicuous supporter and policy. At one point the authors of EastEnders gave Richard a script in which Pauline Fowler was launched into a scold against Thatcher, and Richard refused to do so.
Cancer
Richard was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996; he underwent surgery and appeared to be recovering. She suffered a recurrence of the disease in 2002. Her cancer was in remission after years of treatment and she was given a clean bill of health in 2005. The article about her departure from EastEnders suggests her health problems did not play any role in her decision to leaving the series and that's because his character in the soap remarried, with Richard's displeasure.
Richard then says he's gone because of stress and that he's been stress free since leaving the show. She kept in touch with fellow stars Natalie Cassidy, Todd Carty, and James Alexandrou after leaving.
It was reported in Sunday Express on October 5, 2008 that Richard has been diagnosed with breast cancer again. In January 2008, cancer cells were found in his left armpit. Further investigation showed that this had metastasized to the left kidney and bone, including the spine and left ribs. The actress reportedly planned her funeral and wrote her will.
He created a half-hour program called Wendy Richard: Telling the Truth, documenting the last three months of his life; broadcast on BBC1 on March 19, 2009.
Death
Richard's agent, Kevin Francis, reported he died on February 26, 2009 because of breast cancer, aged 65, at a clinic, Harley Street, London. Her husband, John Burns, was at his bedside. Francis said: "He is very brave and maintains his sense of humor to the end." On the day of his death, the episode of EastEnders and the warning program, both dedicated to Richard, is broadcast on BBC One. Actor Bill Treacher, Richard Arthur Fowler's husband on display at Eastenders, said the actress was "a true professional." Richard's funeral, on March 9, 2009 at St. Parish Church Marylebone, attended by many in the media industry and many fans. His body was then cremated in a private service at the Golders Green Crematorium.
In July 2009, David Croft, the creator of Are You Being Served? , revealing a Heritage Foundation plaque at The Shepherds Tavern in London, run by Richard's parents. A number of entertainers were there to pay homage to the occasion.
