The Kingdom Road (Spanish: Calle Real ; French: Rue Royale ) is a street in the French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It is one of the city's original streets, dating from the early 18th century, and is now known for its antique shops, art galleries, and hotels.
The street begins on Canal Street (on Canal Street, the appropriate street is downtown New Orleans' St. Charles Avenue). Royal flows through the French Quarter, Faubourg Marigny, Bywater, and Lower Ninth Ward Neighborhood to the Jackson Barracks. Industrial Channels form a gap in the road between Bywater and Lower Ninth Ward environments.
Part of Rue Royale in the Upper French Quarter (towards Canal Street) is known for its antique shops and luxury art galleries. The prices in the stores tend to be high; indeed, the area has been listed as one of the most expensive places in the world to shop. Better antiques stores showcase not only old items, but rare items such as pieces of fine furniture owned by the nobility of the last century. The 700 Royal block features artist galleries based in New Orleans, Ally Burguieres and George Rodrigue.
Every afternoon, three blocks of Royal Street in the Quarter, between St. Louis and St. Ann Streets, are closed to traffic to create a pedestrian zone. At that time many street players were established. The outstanding, up-and-coming New Orleans jazz musicians can be heard around, although the players vary greatly. Royal Street also contains restaurants and hotels, especially Hotel Monteleone, a family-owned high-rise building founded in the late 19th century.
Despite the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in much of New Orleans, Royal Street avoided the flood, in addition to the lower ninth ward. The French Quarter, originally the city itself, was built on a higher natural plain next to a curve on the Mississippi River.
