" Knock Three Times " is a popular song credited to Tony Orlando and Dawn. The real singers are Tony Orlando, Toni Wine, and Linda November, before the creation of "Dawn" with Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. The song was released as a single in November 1970, paired with another Orlando hit song, "Candida" (also written by Toni Wine). Hit the number one single on Billboard Hot 100 in January 1971 and eventually sold six million copies, also claiming the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart. The song is well listed on the Contemporary Adult station, reaching # 2 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey.

The composers of this song, L. Russell Brown and Irwin Levine, think about the song Up on the Roof and they want to write songs with such lyrical flavor, about living households. In the song, the singer has fallen in love with a woman who lives in the apartment just below her but has no clue about her interest, so she asks her to respond by knocking three times on the ceiling (yes) or banging twice on the pipe (no) , and the chorus includes sound effects of two choices. (However, the song never stated his response.)

Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis, at the time of recording, worked as a producer/singer for rival record labels, and first heard songs recorded by other artists and soon found out that the song could be a hit if it was produced as he had imagined. Cassavitis cuts tracks by the name of "Tony Orlando", having to do studio sessions on "bottom down" to ensure that his current record label will not become aware. Once released, the song, produced as Orlando wants to be a huge success.

Knock Three Times actually sold over 100,000 recordings per day in New York City for ten consecutive days. This song appeared in several movies including Now and Then.

The song was covered by Billy Craddock's "Crash" in 1971 and became the country's number three hit.

Manny de Leon from the Philippines sold out in the market when he made his version under Alpha Records.

Dolly Parton performed the song on the 1976 episode of Dolly's variety series;

In 1994 the Mexican band Banda Zeta recorded a Spanish version called "Toca tres ves" for their album Jacarandosa .

Some of the parody themed Larry Craig (all titled "Tap Three Times") were recorded by various artists such as Paul and Storm and The Capitol Steps in 2007 following the senator's sex scandal in which he was arrested for slapping his legs (allegedly asking for sex) in public airport toilets.
