Histori
Homejoy was founded in 2010 by siblings Adora and Aaron Cheung, who each work as CEO and VP of Growth. Initially, the company was named Pathjoy.
Co-founder Adora Cheung did some of the first cleaning work, and until late 2013 continues to work at least one cleaning job per month.
Homejoy received an undisclosed amount of funds from Y Combinator in March 2010, but started operations in 2012. Paul Graham says Homejoy is the fastest growing Y Combinator company.
The Company raised $ 1.7 million in initial funding in early 2013. Investors include Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, Resolute.VC, and other individuals and groups. Since then, there have been two other fundraising rounds done by Homejoy (Series A and Series B). The A-series is done in October 2013, and the amount invested during this round has not been publicly disclosed. After Series B, led by Google Ventures, completed in early December 2013, the total earned from both rounds is approximately $ 38 million.
In April 2014, Homejoy expanded to England, its first market outside of North America. It costs Ã, à £ 13 per hour, where cleaners earn between Ã, à £ 7 and Ã, à £ 9.5.
On July 17, 2015, Homejoy announced that it would cease operations on July 31, 2015. The company cited difficulties in maintaining profitability, as well as lawsuits as to whether its workers were contractors or employees. Google hired some of the company's technical staff.

Operation
Homejoy is managed by a team of over 100 employees, and works with thousands of independent professional cleaners in their operating cities in early 2014. They charge a $ 25 per hour uniform rate for the service. Cleaning is wholly bonded, and contracting cleaners on the platform must go through a screening process that involves a third-party background check and certification process.
The corporate culture of Homejoy focuses on the use of technology to improve operational efficiency and offer on-demand services. Investors also appreciate Homejoy for creating jobs in a slow job market by connecting their services to demand and extending their coverage beyond traditional house cleaning companies.
Homejoy Foundation
In December 2013, Homejoy announced the founding of Homejoy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports initiatives for veterans and their families.
Controversy
A former employee stated there was another reason Homejoy was closing in addition to worker classification lawsuits, including expensive international expansions and the leak of his best workers to direct working arrangements with his own (now former) clients. Some questioned the growth of customers by giving a steep $ 19 for the first cleanup, where other companies charge $ 85.
In October 2015, three months after Homejoy was closed, Aaron Cheung, Co-Founder of Homejoy purchased and used the Homejoy customer database to start a similar company, Fly Maids. Cheung admitted that he was behind startup after Homejoy users found his credit card and profile information on the Fly Maid site - without registering. Cheung decided to close the Fly Maids after the news became public to avoid other lawsuits due to improper use of Datajoy's customer databases.
