A crust agent or descaler chemistry is a chemical used to remove limescale from metallic surfaces in contact with hot water, such as in boilers, water heaters, and kettles. Descending agents are usually acidic compounds such as hydrochloric acid which react with the alkali carbonate compounds present in the scale, producing carbon dioxide gas and a soluble salt. Highly acidic crust material is often corrosive to the eyes and skin.
Leading crust agents include acetic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid, formic acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.
