In 1950, Louis J Kearn left his General Manager's position at West Coast Cleaners in San Francisco, California, and founded Coit Services, Inc. Initially, the company's only service was dry cleaning. Seeing great opportunities in the local market, Coit started offering curtain cleaning services. Coit founder Louis J Kearn developed a number of patents for cleaning curtains. In 1952, Louis instituted corporate employment guarantees, which was very unusual at that time for the industry. In 1963 Coit opened the world's first specialized drain removal facility in Burlingame, California. Coit started the franchise in 1962 with the opening of its first franchise in Eureka, California. In the 1970s the company has more than 155 locations across the United States and has expanded its services to include carpet cleaning and upholstery. The 1990s saw expansion into HVAC cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, and refinishing wood flooring. In the 2000s Coit bought Superior Restoration, Inc. in Seattle, Washington and immediately began offering fire fighting, smoke and water damage services nationwide. Coit now offers many types of residential and commercial cleaning, as well as restoration services.

Sexual harassment at Coit
In 2003, Coit Services resolved the lawsuit filed by the United States Cooperation Commission. The lawsuit has been filed by female employees who claim they have been physically and verbally abused by founder and chairman Louis Kearn. Coit agrees to pay US $ 190,000 to the plaintiff, provides sexual harassment training for all of his employees, and apologizes to female employees who were denied promotion after making a claim of sexual harassment.
In 1993, Coit was sued in California state court by an employee who claimed to have been abused by Kearn. Co-responsibility lender Coit refuses to defend on the grounds that his policy does not include deliberate action. The employee settled with Coit; then their lawyers join and sue the insurance company. The court's directive decision for an insurance company is upheld by the California District Court (First District), which approves the policy adoption by the insurer against this situation. Coit Drapery Cleaners, Inc. v. Sequoia Ins. Co. , 14 Cal.App.4th 1595 (1993).
