How to make - build a clothesline - Jon Peters Art & Home
src: jonpeters.com

The line clothing or wash line is a type of rope, cable, or thread that has been stretched between two points (eg two bars), outside or indoors, above the level of soil. The recently washed clothes are hung along the lines to be dried, using clothes pegs or clotheslines. The washing line is attached either from the post or wall, and often in the back garden, or on the balcony. Longer washing lines often have tools that hold parts in the middle because of the weight of wet clothes.

More sophisticated rotary washing lines save space and can usually be drawn and square or triangular, with some lines used (such as the Australian Hills Hoist). Some can be folded when not in use (although there is very little danger to get the finger caught, so there is usually a security button).

In Scotland, many tenement buildings have "green drying", which is a communal area mostly used for clothing lines - it can also be used as a recreation room - as well as a clothing horse connected to a pulley system in it that can be used in winter weather which is often cold.

Comparison

Benefits

  • Save money
  • zero greenhouse gas emissions per load (2 kg CO 2 eq of greenhouse gas emissions from average mechanical clothes dryer per load)
  • Less wear and tear of cloth
  • Laundry items do not shrink (hot air from a mechanical clothes dryer can shrink stuff)
  • There is no static decoration and no perfume smell throughout the environment from fabric softener and anti-static drying sheet.
  • Laundry items remain finer to the touch (mechanical clothing dryers tend to remove fine fibers, smooth, smooth), and may be less tangled
  • Laundry items often do not need to be ironed if lines are easily dried
  • Avoids the potential of air yarns and reduces air quality
  • Eliminate sound from mechanical clothes dryer
  • Do not vent the indoor air out and remove large volumes of conditioned air (heat or cooled) used by mechanical blower dryers.
  • For simple line drying arrangements (straps and pins) the repair and replacement cost is approximately $ 20.00 per 1,000 laundry loads or 2 cents per load. For non-commercial mechanical clothing that drains repair and replacement costs (including labor costs) is about $ 200.00 per 1,000 laundry loads or 20 cents per load.

Losses

  • Placing the laundry on a channel usually takes more time than putting it in the dryer (because the laundry has to be hung and repaired one at a time).
  • Laundry items must be hung indoors during rainy weather, or may be wet if the weather changes.
  • The neighbor may feel very uncomfortable
  • Exposing dirty laundry may reduce privacy, display information about occupant habits.
  • The risk of theft or vandalism of clothing
  • Environmental contaminants such as soil, dust, smoke, automotive or industrial pollutants, pollen and bird and animal droppings can come into contact with clothing.
  • The clothesline can leave traces (including rust from springs) on the clothes.

Dried laundry in the room

Laundry can be dried indoors rather than outdoors for various reasons including:

  • bad weather
  • physical defects
  • lack of space for one line
  • reduces damage to the fabric from the sun's UV rays
  • legal restrictions
  • to increase the humidity level indoors, and lower the air temperature indoors
  • convenience
  • to maintain privacy

Some types of devices are available for indoor drying. Drying racks or horse clothing can help save space in the apartment, or clothing lines can be strung together in the basement during winter. Small loads can only be draped over furniture or shower curtain poles. Drying time indoors will usually take longer than outside drying due to lack of direct solar radiation and convective wind relief.

Evaporation of moisture from clothing will cool the indoor air and increase the humidity level, which may or may not be desirable. In cold and dry weather, a moderate increase in humidity makes most people feel more comfortable. In warm weather, the increase in humidity makes most people feel hotter. Increased humidity can also increase mold growth, which can lead to health problems.

The average sized wash load will convert approximately 4965 kilojoules from ambient heat to latent heat stored in evaporating water, as follows. A typical laundry load of 4 kg can contain 2.2 kg of water, after being spun on a washing machine. To determine how much heat has been converted in drying the load of laundry, weigh the clothes when wet and once again after dry clothes. The difference is the weight of the water evaporating from them. Multiply that weight in kg by 2,257 kJ/kg, which is the heat of evaporation per kilogram, to get the number of kilojoules that go into water evaporation, or multiply by 0.6250 kWh/kg to get kilowatt-hours. (Note: If moisture then condenses in the house, latent heat will be converted back into ambient heat which may increase the air temperature in the room a little.) To get a good estimate of this effect will have a certain situation, the process can be traced on the psychrometric chart.

Factors that determine the drying duration

Various factors determine the duration of drying and may help decide to use a dryer or clothing line

  • Environmental temperature - temperature increase reduces drying duration
  • Environmental humidity - decreasing humidity will decrease the drying duration
  • Wind speed - Sometimes people put fans near clothes while drying them indoors
  • Direct sunlight - usually only external lines exposed to direct sunlight, so usually people put the thickest outer clothes on the outer line.
  • Fabric thickness

Drying laundry in freezing condition

Laundry can be dried outdoors when temperatures are well below freezing. First, the moisture in the laundry will freeze and the clothes will become stiff. Then the frost on the clothes will be sublimated into the air, letting the goods dry. It takes a long time and usually dries more quickly in the room; However, indoor drying removes heat from the air so this is an exchange between speed and energy efficiency.

Controversy in North America

The controversy surrounding the use of clothing lines has prompted many governments to pass a "right-to-dry" law that enables its use. According to Ian Urbina, a reporter for The New York Times, "the vast majority of the 60 million people now living in about 300,000 private communities in the country" are prohibited from using the outerwear line.

In August 2013, the states of Florida, Colorado, Hawaii, Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin ban of clothing lines, with Utah allowing local jurisdictions to ban the ban. At least eight countries restrict homeowner associations banning the application of solar energy systems, and lawyers debate whether the law might apply to clothing lines. A British filmmaker, Steven Lake, plans to release a documentary in 2011 entitled Drying for Freedom of the clothing-line controversy in the United States.

In Canada, the first government of Nova Scotia's NDP province was passed an Act to Prevent Prohibition on Clotheslines Use on December 10, 2010 to allow all homeowners in the province to use clotheslines, regardless of limiting agreements. The province of Ontario lifted a ban on clothing lines in 2008.
