High school career

Dennis is prepared at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and is part of "Long Beach Poly Five", five highly recruited players including Manuel Wright and current NFL players Marcedes Lewis, Darnell Bing and Winston Justice. In May 2007, Dennis still held a rushing career and touchdown goals at Long Beach Poly, as well as a rushed single-season record. Dennis made his final decision between USC and the University of Oregon; his father wanted him to go to Oregon, but he chose USC to honor his mother, Rose Teofilo, who wanted him closer to home.

He is also on the Poly track team, with a best time of 10.7 seconds at 100 yards, 22.3 seconds at 200 meters, 6.75 meters on a long jump and 1.98 meters at high jumps, and a basketball team. Current Trojans Vincent Joseph, Travon Patterson and Alfred Rowe also set up in Poly.

College career

As a freshman in the 2002 season, Dennis is a reserve behind the stable of experienced seniors including backbanks Justin Fargas and Sultan McCullough and fullback/tailbacks Malaefou MacKenzie and Sunny Byrd; However, he did see playing time in all 13 matches, highlighted by a 38-yard touchdown run against UCLA rivals. In 2003, he was the first tailback in all 13 games over Reggie Bush and LenDale White.

However, Dennis lost his starting place for the 2004 season, has been suspended from the first two games due to a criminal investigation that was generated (which later cleared it of any fault) and broke the team's rules. This allowed the White and Bush tandem to appear and throw Dennis into a reserve role for most of the season. Dennis did appear in a total of 9 games in the 2004 season, but was struck by a serious knee ligament, a tearing season end in practice before the 2005 Orange Bowl. During this period, Dennis considered moving to another program, but his mother pressured him to stay and pass as he was the only Teofilo boy who went to college.

The same torn knee ligament makes Dennis not participate throughout the 2005 season, having used his redshirt year, he lost a year of eligibility. Going into the 2006 season, Dennis is a leading career rusher among today's student athletes. Unfortunately, in training Dennis's spring back hit the knee-end injury of the season, causing him to actually lose his second year in a row. Although this will eliminate the final year of worthiness, Dennis and USC apply to the NCAA for the sixth year of eligibility, given the extreme circumstances. Dennis returns to full-contact practice in spring 2007 practice In May 2007, Dennis graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology. The NCAA appealed for its sixth year of eligibility in June 2007.

During his final game, the 2008 Rose Bowl game against Illinois, Dennis rushed for a touchdown, the first of the season and first since 2004, leading his team-mates to hurry the goal from the sidelines in celebration (and excessive celebratory punishment).

At the end of his six-year USC career, Dennis became the first player to play in six Pac-10 Championship teams. In addition to the conference awards, Dennis also made a center contribution to the team that finished in BCS top 5 for 6 consecutive seasons (2002-07). With 70 wins (and only 8 losses) in that range, Hershel Dennis is "the most winning player" in the history of Football College.
