A sexton is a church officer, congregation, or synagogue assigned to the maintenance of the building and/or the surrounding cemetery. In smaller places of worship, this office is often combined with verger. In larger buildings, such as cathedrals, sextons teams can be used.
Historically in North America and Britain, "sexton" is sometimes a small town official who is responsible for overseeing the city cemetery. In the UK its position still exists today, with respect to the management of community cemeteries, and sexton is usually employed by the city council/parish or community.

The words "sexton" and "sacristan" are both derived from the medieval Latin word sacristanus meaning "keeper of sacred objects". "Sexton" represents a popular development of the word through Old French "Segrestein".
