Plot
Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) is a former smuggler who now has a peaceful life with his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and their two sons in New Orleans. They learned that Kate's brother, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) was a drug trafficker, but dropped him into the Mississippi River during a surprise checkup by the US Customs and Border Protection.
Boss Andy, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) mafia threatens to kill Chris's family if Andy does not pay him $ 700,000. Chris decides to raise money by running contraband, working with his former smuggler partner, Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster), who now owns a legitimate construction company. Promising Kate she will not run drugs, Chris joins a cargo ship, plans to buy $ 10,000,000 in a fake bill in Panama and smuggle it into the US. He joins Andy, his best friend Danny Raymer (Lukas Haas), and gets help from a colleague crew. After Briggs broke into Chris's house and intimidated his wife and children, Kate moved to Sebastian's house for safety.
In Panama, Chris finds out that the only one who can deliver a high-quality counterfeit bill is the lord of Gonzalo's crime (Diego Luna). Leaving Andy in the van with money for a fake bill, Chris meets with Gonzalo to negotiate. Briggs calls Andy, threatening to kill one of Chris's sons and force him to take the money and buy cocaine. With the money lost, Chris and Danny agree to help Gonzalo rob a armored car in return for a fake bill. After the shootout where Gonzalo's group along with many police and security officers were killed, they managed to steal a painting of Jackson Pollock that resembled a tarpaulin splatter. Chris and Danny could barely get back on board with the counterfeit banknotes and paintings. They drive a van with contraband into the container, which is loaded onto their cargo ship. Chris hit and scolded Andy for using money to buy cocaine, but apologized when Andy explained why.
It was revealed that Sebastian worked with Briggs, and he desperately needed the money to pay for Jim Church Gangster (David O'Hara). Sebastian calls Chris and finds out that Chris is planning to get rid of the cocaine that Andy buys. Sebastian instructed Briggs to threaten Kate. Through Kate, Briggs warns Chris not to throw away cocaine. Chris realizes that Sebastian has betrayed him. Sebastian contacts the captain of the cargo ship (J. K. Simmons), with whom he partnered. He says contraband contraband Camp of Chris, and promises him a part if he secures it. Unable to ask Chris to let go of contraband, Camp called US Customs to check ship in New Orleans. The Customs agent found the container with van Chris, which was empty except for the splattering paint, which they ignored.
Once Chris is on the beach, Briggs and his criminals are demanding a package of drugs. Chris takes Briggs to Camp's house, having made a duplicate key while on board, and consciously activates the security system. Chris opens the Camp carpet cleaner and takes the cocaine from him. While Briggs and his gang sit in Camp's living room with cocaine, Chris sneaks out. The camp woke up to the noise and came into the living room when the police arrived. The Briggs and Camp groups were arrested for possession of cocaine.
Warned by Chris, Kate leaves Sebastian's house. When he returns to pick up some personal possessions, Sebastian gets mad at him and accidentally pushes him into the tub. Thinking he was dead, he dumped his body (unconscious) inside the foundation that had not been poured in one of his construction sites. Chris goes to Sebastian's construction site and manages to find and save Kate by calling his cell phone. Sebastian was arrested and sent to prison, where he was greeted by a mass murder.
Danny takes the fake money, which is dumped into the Mississippi River by Chris before docking in New Orleans. At a US Customs auction, Andy buys an escaping van previously seized from a cargo ship, and finds the painting still in it. The Church paid Chris $ 3 million for the counterfeit currency and asked about missing Jackson Pollock. Chris learned that the painting could be fenced more than $ 20 million on the black market. The movie ends with Chris, Kate, Andy and kids starting a new life at a seaside home.

Critical reception
Contraband compiled mixed reviews from critics. Currently holding 51/100 on Metacritic shows "mixed or average review". Based on 156 reviews, the film currently holds a score of "foul", 51%, of Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus saying: "It's more entertaining than your average January action thriller, but that's not enough to excuse no Contraband originality and plot which does not need to be convoluted. "
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a 2/4 star and felt that " Contraband involves a lot of energy," but he grows "tired of the violent retreading of this element of theft. "Tom Long of The Detroit News criticized the movie for having" too many plots and too few characters "and concluded that it" came from the factory floor with the engine running and ready to drive, but the ride was too familiar. "Claudia Puig from USA Today calls the last" very weary "trophy" [...] "and says that while it" has some tension moments, "the film" embraces a predictable theft formula almost unfit to trade. "Andrew O'Hehir of Salon characterizes the film as" a Hollywood-made type of film, the kind that looks on paper as if it should be entertaining, but ends with a big obstacle and chaotic. " "And observed that" it is much more like a cynical hash job, which in a realistic way can not conceal all situations of a hacked crime movie. "
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone thinks the film is "down in the ocean of Hollywood clichà ©" and Mark's "Wahlberg can sleep walking through this role, and no. Look at this movie and you will definitely follow his leadership." Kyle Smith of the New York Post made fun of the movie, noting that "watching a hero's development because mostly for lucky breaks and stupid steps by others does not make movies" and that "it's confusing why someone considers this script worth to be photographed. "Scott Tobias of NPR considers the film to be" an ordinary thriller, "something" to remember, vaguely. " Rafer Guzman of Newsday stated his disappointment that "a little bit of action is all you will get" and argues that the movie "fails by exceeding the limit: It aspires to high drama The Departed but landed in the dumps of a forgotten product action. "
Justin Chang of Variety praised the film as "pretty fast and effective" and to take "a hard line of action and commitment to one-doomed-thing-after-another story", while suffering from a "detour that does not make sense. " Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post compares the film to "Ocean's Eleven , minus glamor". Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly stated that the movie, "although often unclear and far-fetched, keeps you watching", which is enough for a movie released in January.
