Histori

The city dates from the Celtic era around 300 BC. It is located on two main Roman streets: Fosse Road from Lincoln to Seaton, and the Dorchester Road to Exeter. There is a Roman fort at the crossroads at Woodbury Farm, just south of this city. Axminster appeared on the Peutinger Map, one of only 15 English cities on a Roman era map.

Axminster was recorded at the end of the 9th century as Ascanmynster and in the Domesday Book 1086 as Aixeministra . Its name means "monastery or big church by the River of Kapak" and is a mixture of languages; the river name Ax has Celtic origins and mynster is an Old English word.

The history of the city is closely linked to the carpet industry, started by Thomas Whitty in the Court House near the church in 1755. The completion of the first-hand tufted carpet was marked by the rumbling of bells from the parish church while taking much time and effort to complete it.

In 1210, a charter was granted to a city that included the right to hold a weekly cattle market that took place in the market square until it was transferred to Trinity Square in 1834. It then moved in October 1912 to a site on South Street where it was held during 94 years old. Finally closed in 2006 after the British foot and mouth outbreak of 2001. A building on the site then continues to be used for public auction until all buildings are destroyed and replaced by housing construction.

The city is on a training route from London to Exeter. In 1760, the lodge named The George Hotel opened at the corner of Lyme Street and Chard Street on the site of an old inn called Cross Keys which was destroyed by fire in 1759. More than 16 trainers a day will stop at the hotel in its heyday for drinks and to change horses, buildings still standing but currently uninhabited. Axminster is on the route of The Trafalgar Way which is the name given to the historic route used to carry the news with the news of the Battle of Trafalgar ashore from Falmouth, Cornwall to Admiralty in London in 1805 and there is a plaque to commemorate this fact. In the city center.

Part of the Axminster parish has historically been an exclusively Dorset exclusion to the Counties (Detached Parts) Act of 1844, when it was fully incorporated into Devon.

The Axminster railway station opened on 19 July 1860, with London and the South Western Railway (LSWR) offering direct services between Central Station in Exeter and Yeovil. The station building was designed by LSWR architect Sir William Tite in gothic style. In 1903, the branch line from Axminster to Lyme Regis opened. This branch line was closed with Beeching cuts, in the 1960s. One machine has been preserved on the Bluebell Line, in Sussex, while the station was disassembled and reconstructed at New Alresford, on the Water Sewers Line, in Hampshire.

Axminster is the starting point south of the Taunton Strip Line, a World War II line of defense consisting of pill boxes and anti-tank barriers, which run north to the Somerset coast near Highbridge.

Nearby Kilmington is used as the location for the 1998 LWT adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles . The celebrity chef and TV presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall owns River Cottage H.Q. on a 60 hectare (24 acre) farm in the Ax valley. He had bought an old inn that once provided a city ballroom, now converted into a store/market of organic produce and cafeteria.
