The Hillside Strangler , then Hillside Stranglers , is a media epitet for one, then two American serial killers who terrorized Los Angeles between October 1977 and February 1978, with a nickname derived from fact that many bodies of victims are found on the sides of the Hollywood Hills. The police, however, knew because of the body position that was massacred by two people, but held back this information from the press. The two men found were Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono's cousins, who were later convicted of kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of ten women, ranging in age from 12 to 28.

The Hillside Strangler assassination began with the deaths of three sex workers who were found strangled and thrown naked on the hillside of northeastern Los Angeles between October and early November 1977, but not until the deaths of five young women who were not sex workers but girls who had been abducted from middle-class neighborhood, that media attention and subsequently "Hillside Strangler" became a moniker. There were two more deaths in December and February before the killing suddenly stopped, an extensive investigation proved futile until Bianchi's arrest in January 1979 for the murder of two young women in Washington State and connecting his past with the Strangler case.. The most expensive trial in the history of California's legal system at the time was followed, with Bianchi and Buono eventually found guilty of this crime and sentenced to life in prison.

In January 1976, Kenneth Bianchi left Rochester, New York and moved to Los Angeles, California to live with his cousin, Angelo Buono, Jr. Buono provided a powerful example for the benign Bianchi, and, when Bianchi was short of money, Buono came up with the idea of making some girls work for them as prostitutes. Two teenage escapades, Sabra Hannan and Becky Spears, met Bianchi and Buono and, once under their control, were forced to prostitute themselves. Finally, Spears meets with lawyer David Wood, who is shocked by his situation and arranges for him to flee the city. Driven by Spears's escape, Hannan escaped from Bianchi and Buono moments later. With their pimping income gone, they have to find more girls. Imitating police officers, they finally find another young woman and put her up in the girl's bedroom before. Also, they buy from a prostitute named Deborah Noble who is considered a "deceit list" with the names of men who often visit prostitutes. Deborah and her friend, Yolanda Washington, gave Buono a list of tricks in October 1977.

Yolanda Washington

Yolanda happened to mention to Buono that he always worked on a certain stretch on Sunset Boulevard. When Bianchi and Buono discover that Deborah has tricked them about the list but can not find it, they decide to wreak their anger at Yolanda. Her naked body was discovered on October 18, 1977, on the hillside near Ventura Freeway, and Detective Frank Salerno of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department was summoned to the scene. It has been determined that the corpse is cleansed before disposal; faint marks seen around the neck, wrist, and ankle where the rope has been used; and that the victim had been raped.

Judy Miller

Lissa Kastin

Five days later, on November 6, 1977, another naked female body was found near the Chevy Chase Country Club, in Glendale. Like Miller, he puts on ligature signs (neck, wrist and ankle) and has been strangled and brutally raped, but not sodomized. The woman was identified as a twenty-one-year-old waiter Elissa Teresa "Lissa" Kastin, who was last seen leaving the restaurant where she worked the night before her body was found. Kastin is also a professional dancer for The L.A. Knockers and unlike the two previous victims are not prostitutes, drug users or runaway. The strangers followed Kastin after he was seen driving home from work, pulling him to the street where he lives, showing a fake police badge, and telling him they were detectives. They then handcuffed her and told her that they needed to take her for interrogation.

The aborted killing of Catharine Lorre Baker

At a point in early November 1977, the two men approached 24-year-old Catharine Lorre Baker, daughter of actor Peter Lorre - famous for her role as a serial killer in the movie Fritz Lang - - with the intention of kidnapping and killing her. However, when they find a picture of him sitting on his father's lap between his credentials, they let him go without incident. He did not realize who the men were until they were arrested, at which point he remembered that the two men who installed the L.A police badge had approached him in the past. The two bodies were found by a nine-year-old boy who had been treasure hunting in a pile of garbage on the hillside near Dodger Stadium, on November 20, 1977. Both bodies of the girl had begun to rot, but it still determined that they had been strangled and raped.

Kristina Weckler

Earlier that same day, November 20, 1977, a pedestrian found the naked body of Kristina Weckler's twenty-year-old, a quiet honorary student at the Art Center College of Design who was considered by Detective Bob Grogan of the Los Angeles Police Department to be a "young woman a loving and serious person who should have a bright future ahead of him, on the hillside between Glendale and Eagle Rock. When discovered by Grogan, the marks of scars are on his wrists, ankles and necks, and when he turns his body, bruises on her breasts were clearly visible and blood rushed out of her rectum, but unlike the first three victims, there were two stab marks on her arm, but there were no signs of a needle imprint that indicated a drug addict. He later revealed that Weckler had been injected with Windex, hard surface.

Jane King

On November 23, 1977, the corpse of 28-year-old Evelyn Jane King, a missing actress around November 9, was found near Los Feliz street at Golden State Freeway. The severity of the decomposition prevents the determination of whether he has been raped or tortured but he has been strangled like the others and in the response authority creates a task force - originally comprised of 30 officers from the LAPD, the Sheriff's Department and the Glendale Police Department - To catch predators now dubbed "Hillside Strangler".

Lauren Wagner

She found that the woman who lived in the house where Lauren's car was parked saw her kidnapping. Martin had previously joined the girl's call agent because he was afraid of exposing himself on the streets with Strangler on loose, but, unfortunately, the killer happened to place a call to his agent from the public phone of the Hollywood Public Library and he was the call girl sent. When the police investigated the apartment he sent, they found him empty and damaged.

Cindy Hudspeth

The last victim was found at L.A. on February 17, 1978, when a helicopter pilot saw an orange Datsun leave a cliff at the Angeles Crest Highway. The police responded to the scene and found the body of the car owner, Cindy Lee Hudspeth, twenty years old - a student and a part-time maid - in the trunk. His corpse again showed signs of binding, and he had been raped and tortured. It appears he has been strangled and put in the trunk of his car, which is then pushed off a cliff above it.

Investigation and trial

In January 1979, after intensive investigation, the police accused Bianchi and Buono of committing crimes. Bianchi had fled to Bellingham, Washington, where he was soon arrested for raping and killing the two women he had lured home for homework-sitting. Bianchi attempts to form a madness defense, claiming that he has a dissociative identity disorder and that a personality separate from him commits murder. Court psychologists, especially Dr. Martin Orne, observes Bianchi and discovers that he is faking, so Bianchi agrees to plead guilty and testify against Buono in exchange for leniency.

At the end of the Buono trial in 1983, Chief Justice Ronald M. George, then Supreme Court Justice of California Supreme Court, stated during the sentence, "I will have no reluctance to impose the death penalty in this case whether it is in my power to do so. Ironically, even though these two defendants use almost all forms of legalized execution against their victims, the defendants have escaped all forms of capital punishment. "Bianchi was serving a life sentence at the Washington Correctional Institution at Walla Walla. Buono died of a heart attack on September 21, 2002, at California State Prison in California, where he served a life sentence.
