Frederick McKinley Jones (May 17, 1893 - February 21, 1961) is an inventor, entrepreneur, winner of the African National Technological Medal, and one who participates in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. His innovation in cooling brought great improvements to the long-distance transport of perishables. He founded Thermo King.

Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 17, 1893. After he was almost orphaned at the age of seven, he was raised by a pastor at a Catholic presbytery in Cincinnati. Jones left school after grade 6 and left the rectory to return to Cincinnati at the age of 11, where he got his first job as a cleaner and at 14 he worked as a car mechanic. He enhances his natural mechanical ability and inventive mind by reading and learning independently and willingness to find new pastures in his quest for progress, against the odds. In 1912, Jones moved to Hallock, Minnesota, where he worked as a mechanic on a farm of 50,000 acres (200 km km 2 ). After service with the US Army in World War I, Jones returned to Hallock; while working as a mechanic, Jones taught himself electronics and built a transmitter for a new city radio station. He also invented a device to combine sound with moving images. This caught the attention of Joseph A. Numero of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who hired Jones in 1930 to fix the sound equipment made by his company, Cinema Supplies Inc.

Cooling
Around 1938, Jones designed a portable air-conditioning unit for trucks carrying perishable food, and received a patent for him on July 12, 1940. Numero sold his voice film equipment business to RCA and established a new company in partnership with Jones, USA. The Thermo Control Company (later Thermo King Company) became a $ 3 million business in 1949. The portable cooling unit designed by Jones was very important during World War II, preserving blood, medicine and food for use in army hospitals and open battlefield.
Difference and honor
During his life, Jones was awarded 61 patents. Forty for cooling equipment, while others go for portable X-ray machines, sound equipment, and gasoline engines. In 1944, Jones became the first African American to be elected to the American Society of Refrigeration Engineers, and during 1950 he was a consultant to the US Department of Defense and the Bureau of Standards. In 1991, the National Technology Medal was awarded to Joseph A. Numero and Frederick M. Jones. President George Bush presented a posthumous award to their widows at a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden. Jones was the first African American to receive the award. He died of lung cancer in Minneapolis in 1961. He was inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in 1977.
