History
The area covering the Fountain Valley was originally inhabited by the Tongva people. The European settlement in the area began when Manuel Nieto was given land to Rancho Los Nietos, which included more than 300,000 acres (1,200 km 2 ), including the current Fountain Valley. Control over the land was then transferred to Mexico after independence from Spain, and then to the United States as part of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Agreement.
The city was founded in 1957, before being known as Talbert (also as the Gospel Swamp by the population). The name Fountain Valley refers to the very high water table in the area at the time the name was chosen, and many artesian wells were associated in the area. Early settlers built drainage canals to make land use for agriculture, which remained dominant land use until the 1960s, when the construction of large housing ducts was accelerated. The first mayor of the Fountain Valley is James Kanno, who with this appointment became the first Japanese-American mayor of a mainland United States city.
After the fall of Saigon in 1975, there was a large influx of Vietnamese refugees settled in the Fountain Valley, especially in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, forming most of the Asian Americans in the city.
