Histori

It is likely that much of the development in the Foster-Powell Environment follows the construction of Portland's original electric tramway in the 1890s. The neighborhood pavement was built in 1912. On November 10, 2009 the southeast wing of Maryhurst Foster-Powell Elementary School was burned in what was associated with an electric fire.

Transportation

The three roads adjacent to Foster-Powell are the main transport arteries, providing ease of access for the environment to the city center via Foster to the west or Powell, North Portland or Clackamas via 82, or interstate through the eastern path at Foster. All three streets are home to frequent services of the Trimet bus line: 14 links Foster to Hawthorne and downtown; 9 link Powell Blvd. with downtown and Northeast Portland, and 72 runs at 82 from Clackamas Town Center to North Killingsworth Avenue. In addition, 17 runs to Holgate Avenue to downtown and North Portland.

The distance to the bike from Foster-Powell to downtown is about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on where in the neighborhood you started. Although Foster-Powell is bordered by heavily trafficked streets that are not ideal for cyclists, there are eastern-west bike routes through neighborhoods on Center Road, and north of the neighborhood on Woodward Street.

The official plan for the future extension of Streetcar Portland pictured line runs to Foster. There is also a discussion about building a new MAX rail line on Powell Blvd. Both plans, however, remain on the drawing board.

Geography

Foster-Powell is home to three parks: Essex Park at 79th and Center, Kern Park at 66th and Center, and Laurelwood Park at the intersection of Foster Road and Holgate Boulevard. In addition, Firland Parkway, a median with large trees in the center of the 72th Ave between Foster and Holgate, is also located in that neighborhood. Most commercial activity takes place on the outskirts of the neighborhood - in Powell, Foster and 82, while the interior is mostly residential.

Demographics

Foster-Powell has earned a reputation as a diverse ethnic environment, with growing populations of Russia, Vietnam, China, and Hispanics in the neighborhood. This population increase was measured through improved Russian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Spanish language circulation at the Foster-Powell Library Multnomah Library at 79th and Holgate.
