Flame cleanup, also known as flame , is the process of cleaning the surface of structural steel by passing a very hot oxyacetylene flame on it. The scale and rust of the mill are removed by reducing the effects of fire and heat action, leaving the surface in a condition suitable for wire brushing and painting.

Overview

There are many uses to clean the flame not only to remove rust and plant scale. It is also used as an eraser for paint, bad welding, grinding, mechanical wear (friction, cutting, gouges and other) along with other surface imperfections. The process of cleaning a flame is not something new and does not require any additional equipment from what will be found in an ordinary metal shop. This is just a fuel-oxygen torch that is used parallel to the surface to melt and extinguish all defects that operators want to remove. Shown on adjacent diagrams, the surface is destroyed with a surface-oxygen fuel torch versus the use of orthodox fire as a cutting tool or gouging. Although the equipment is the same, the fire used in the cleaning is drastically reduced to prevent the removal of excessive surfaces. Different types of fuel can be run with oxygen, for example acetylene.

Various surfaces can be cleaned using this process. Oxy-flame can work on a variety of surface qualities and eliminate some of the most difficult substances to clean such as lubricants and greases. Ceramics, steel construction, offshore systems and even concrete elements can all be cleaned. Although the cleaning function can be completed thoroughly, the general aesthetic look is damaged due to burn marks by oxy-flame. The surface is then ready for further processing such as painting, milling or other further operations.
