Plot

Ronald Miller is a high school nerd who lives in the suburbs of Tucson, Arizona. He has spent all summer mowing the grass to save for the telescope. At the right moment, he made a deal with his next-door neighbor and popular cheerleader Cynthia "Cindy" Mancini. Cindy borrowed her mother's expensive clothes without permission, to wear to the party, only for Quint to accidentally spill red wine. Cindy reluctantly agrees to help Ronald look "cool" by pretending to be his girlfriend for a month for $ 1000, even though he already has a boyfriend named Bobby who attends the University of Iowa.

Ronald then trafficked his bookish, but loyal, friends to the popular, but superficial, students and underwent full outfits and hair makeovers under Cindy's direction. Over time, bonding develops between the two. He let him read the poem he wrote meant so much to him. He expressed interest in astronomy and space travel. On the last date that Ronald had "paid", Cindy hinted that she wanted to kiss her, but she misunderstood. They dramatically "break up" in front of the crowd at school, but Ronald takes things a bit too far and says some painful things about Cindy in front of their friends. He becomes cold and distant, but warns him that popularity is hard work and he needs to make sure he "keeps himself". The next day, she sees him acting arrogantly at school, and becomes jealous when he sees him flirting with his best friends Barbara and Patty.

She took Patty to a dance at school, where she performed the dance she learned from African cultural shows on public television. At first, the other kids were confused, but they soon joined in, and Ronald's new "trendy" dance grew in popularity. On Halloween night, he and several other boys went to the home of Kenneth, Ronald's best friend, where athletes tested his loyalty by forcing him to throw dog poop into Kenneth's home. Kenneth is waiting and catches Ronald, but lets him go before his father can call the police. Kenneth ignored Ronald the next day at school.

At New Years Eve party at Big John's house, Ronald gets drunk and has sex with Iris's date in the bathroom. Cynthia walked by and heard Ronald reciting Iris's special poem to her. Feeling ruined, he started drinking a lot. Then, as a surprise, Cindy's girlfriend, Bobby, shows up at the party. After he learned about his relationship with Ronald, he broke up with him. He tried to explain the situation, but he kept walking out to her. In anger and frustration, he told the party goers about the truth. Rejected and sad, Ronald went and spent the night in his garage, crying to sleep. When school came back, she found herself ostracized by "athletes" and nerds. His efforts to make peace with Cindy and Kenneth were rejected.

Ronald got a chance to redeem himself. Kenneth, helping Patty with his math homework, was ordered by Quint to get back to the canteen side or receive a serious beating. Ronald intervened, threatening to break Quint's arm if he did not leave Kenneth alone. Ronald points out that all three are friends at once: when they were nine years old, Quint fell out of their tree house and broke his arm. Kenneth and Ronald took him twelve blocks to the hospital. Ronald admits he is desperate to run with a popular crowd, but has been fucked by trying to buy driveways. Ronald goes on to say that the cool dynamic/nerd is "all nonsense, it's strong enough to just be yourself", and walk away. Quint apologizes to Kenneth and both shakes hands as the whole school applauds.

After the incident, Cindy recognizes Ronald's worth and jumps behind his lawn mower. He asked for the prom, and two kisses as the title of the song being played. Both climbed into the sunset on the lawn mower.

Production notes

The film was taken at a location in Tucson, Arizona, at Tucson High Magnet School (later known as Tucson High School). The choreography is by Paula Abdul, who makes an unqualified appearance as a dancer.

On the date on which the main characters begin to tie, they jump onto the perimeter wall and explore 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group Aircraft Bone Yard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base which contains 4,400 aircraft. Although the characters say they jumped the fence at 309 AMARG (The Boneyard), the scene actually looks more like a shot at Bob's Air Park, recycler plane outside Boneyard, which has been sold.

Remake

In 2003, Can not Buy Me Love was re-created as Love Do not Cost a Thing starring Nick Cannon and Christina Milian. Although the triggering event is different between the two films, many aspects/scenes of the original film are reinterpreted in this remake, such as eating raw eggs in the Home Economy class, as well as cheerleaders telling the bully that he is sitting in the wrong section of the cafeteria that he (the intruder) had to sit in the "bastard" in the cafeteria.
