Life and career
Azie Faison Jr. was born in the Bronx district of New York City on November 10, 1964. He lived with his only mother and elder sister in the neighborhood until 1970, where, at the age of 6, fire destroyed his tenement. The family was then forced to move to the Sugar Hill neighborhood in Harlem.
Faison, who struggled academically, dropped out after ninth grade, and worked in some side jobs around Harlem, including a two-year assignment at a local dry cleaning. After attending the screening of the 1983 film Scarface, Faison was influenced to enter the drug trade, and later that year, established a working relationship with a local Dominican supplier, who frequented dry cleaners. Faison would later be introduced to cocaine, and would become one of the first drug distributors in New York in 1984.
By the time he was 21, Faison would transition to cocaine wholesale in Harlem, which reportedly earned over $ 100,000 a week. He will eventually expand operations until 1990, and became one of the most prominent distributors during the War on Drug era in the United States. During this time, he will be reintroduced to Rich Porter, a childhood friend who lived in the neighborhood before serving his sentence in prison. Once released, Porter will introduce Alpo Martinez to Faison, and the trio are working to expand operations to rise and become the largest cocaine distributor in New York state.
However, the fall of Faison began in 1987, after he became the victim of attempted murder in August, after a misguided robbery, which killed three people and three others seriously injured. Faison was shot nine times in a robbery attempt, and caused the drug network to break down as he aimed to recover from his injuries. This caused great tension in the relationship between Faison, Porter, and Martinez, with the latter eventually killing Porter in 1990, and temporarily subsequently arrested and convicted for numerous allegations in 1991.
After Porter's death, Faison effectively retired from drug trafficking, and adopted a mission to keep young people away from illicit drugs. In 1989, he formed a rap group called MobStyle, which later transitioned into a conscious group of hip-hop. They released the album in 1991, while Faison also released a solo album. Faison also aims to expand its reach via television and media, eventually working on autobiographical films. The movie, titled Paid in Full , was released in 2002, with Faison played by Wood Harris.
Faison also collaborated with the street documentary Troy Reed, to produce a documentary film about his life called Game Over, while also working with Agyei Tyehimba to write Game Over: The Rise and Transformation of Harlem Hustler . Both documentaries and books were released in 2007, and the last was discussed at the Harlem Book Fair later that year, on a panel featuring co-author Tyehimba, and Congressman Charles Rangel. The discussion was broadcast live by TV Book C-SPAN. Faison has also been referenced several times in rap songs, with alias being even borrowed as a stage name for rapper Brooklyn, AZ.
